If you have looked recently for local Internet providers by zip code, you probably noticed that Qwest Communications was recently acquired by CenturyLink. For many years Qwest provided telephone, Internet, and some digital TV service to customers in several states, especially in the west. Last year, after it was acquired, CenturyLink became the third largest telecommunications company in the United States. The acquisition has meant different things to the citizens of different areas. For instance, in Southern Utah the merge will result in a building up of Internet infrastructure in communities near St George and Cedar City. Fiber optics upgrades are also planned for the Utah communities of Hurricane and Enoch. These are positive signs and good for the local economies.
Other areas, too, where Qwest DSL and telephone service were previously available will now see additional growth under the CenturyLink banner. Many times growth will equate to new jobs. Jackie Lalor, a CenturyLink spokeswoman, said of the Utah area that there will be “no decrease in the work force. In fact, we expect to see an increase in our work force to enable us to keep up with demand.” Utah residents, like residents of other states, are also noticing how the logos on buildings have been switching over from the familiar Qwest signage to CenturyLink.
